MHO Golf Outing

Green Bay, WI

July 19, 2024

The annual golf outing commemorating the legacy of Mark Heffernan and giving back to the Green Bay community

In memory of Mark Heffernan, January 13, 1978 – April 27, 2015

The MHO is important to me because it reminds me of my father.

It feels nice that everyone comes and remembers his life in a happy way, by playing golf and talking to one another. I see lots of my dad’s friends and family. It makes me feel like my dad is still here.

I’m sure that my dad is proud that we are remembering him in a happy way, and not being gloomy about it. I meet new people every time, and see people who I don’t often get to see. It makes me thrilled to see how many people come out to the MHO – to know how many people love and appreciate him. It’s a great time watching everyone get along and have fun and it’s just a great day for me, my mom, my grandparents, and everyone at the MHO”.

SPONSORS

We would like to thank all the magnanimous and generous sponsors who have helped to make the Mark Heffernan Open a reality.

About the MHO

When we began this journey in 2014, our goal was to raise money to help alleviate the financial burden on Mark’s family. We were determined to raise money to not only help pay Mark’s medical bills, but also to help start a fund for Mark’s daughter, Kiera, to go to college. This was one of the many dreams Mark always envisioned for his daughter.

Today, we continue the annual tradition of the Mark Heffernan Open to honor Mark’s legacy. Money raised during this event is used to support our community in two different ways. 1. Provide an annual scholarship to St. Norbert College 2. Provide a scholarship to an East De Pere High School student to help offset college costs.

To sustain this tradition, in 2019 we created the MHO golf outing as a 501c3. When you sign up to attend this outing, know that the funds raised are for charitable purposes and are tax deductible. You will receive a tax receipt for all donations after the outing.

"Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented."

- Arnold Palmer

Mark Heffernan’s Story

Mark Heffernan was hospitalized and diagnosed with Metastatic Melanoma (stage IV Melanoma) on April 2, 2014. Metastatic Melanoma is a skin cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Although he showed no real symptoms prior to April 2nd, his cancer was very advanced. He endured several surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy, and long hospital stays throughout his journey with cancer. Mark fought hard and proved the doctors wrong on many occasions. His battle ended on April 27, 2015, with his family by his side.

Mark was a 2000 graduate of St. Norbert College. Following college, he was employed by Wipfli. In 2003, he began to work at VerHalen, Inc. as an accounting manager, controller, and for the last several years, as CFO. Mark and his wife Melissa were married for 10 years and have a daughter, Keira.

Mark was a passionate sports fan. He loved attending sporting events and cheering on his favorite from home. He also loved golfing and considered Hilly Haven his “home course.” This outing is a celebration of his life and loves – family, friends, golfing, and a good time.

Mark is missed by many daily, but those who knew him are blessed that he was a part of their lives. Please protect yourself from melanoma – wear sunscreen and visit a dermatologist to have your skin checked. Visit www.melanoma.org for more information about ways to support melanoma research.
